Angela Bassett Had a Much Better MCU Experience Than Anthony Hopkins: 'I'm Sorry for Him'

Angela Bassett has admitted that she had a much better experience on the set of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever than Anthony Hopkins had with the Thor franchise.

In an interview with The New Yorker, Bassett, who plays Queen Ramonda in the Black Panther films, explained how her filming experience differed from that of some of her fellow MCU actors who acted on green-screen heavy sets, like Hopkins in the Thor franchise.

"The throne room was there, the floor of red clay, the elevation with the Dora Milaje flanking around, the grand doors that they walk through. So maybe you don't see the world of Wakanda, but we had that," she said.

"When Shuri and I went out into the wild, we had trees and bushes and water for yards and yards and yards, and Namor came up out of the water and flew to us," Bassett continued. "We had the entire ship, and the attention to detail inside of it was just magnificent."

By comparison, Hopkins told The New Yorker in 2021 that Marvel green screen acting is "pointless." He explained that when he turned up to shoot his scenes as Odin for the Thor franchise, there was "no acting required" as he simply had to "sit on the throne" and "shout a bit."

Bassett sympathised with Hopkins' experience on the set of Thor, explaining how the Black Panther production team managed to bring the world of Wakanda to life through a more tangible set design that gave the cast an authentic setting to immerse themselves in.

"I had it much better than Anthony Hopkins. I'm sorry for him," she said, adding, "We had Shuri's lab. We had the elevator opening up. We had a fake elephant and her baby come in. Of course, they made the generated elephant later, but at least we had an elephant to respond to."
