Elemental: Casting, Release Date Announced for Pixar's Next Movie

Elemental, Pixar's 27th movie, was further teased at D23 today for the live audience, with an announcement of a June 16, 2023 release as well as some of the casting.

Revealed at D23 2022, director Pete Sohn and producer Denise Ream took to the stage to discuss the upcoming film. "It felt right to tell a story about everyone who’s ever made a sacrifice or taken a risk, and set it in the big city… but with a twist," said Ream.

The duo also announced that Wade will be played by Mamoudou Athie (The Circle, Jurassic World Dominion), and Ember will be played by Leah Lewis (Nancy Drew, The Half of It).

The audience at D23 was treated to some animation and concept art looks that explore the question of what it would be like to live in a city if what made you different was quite literally what you were made of. What would riding the subway be like? What would sports be like? There was also an exclusive trailer highlightin the relationship between Ember and Wade.

Elemental was announced earlier this year, with just a single piece of concept art. Elemental is set in a city where fire, water, land, and air-residents live together. It follows Ember, a fiery young woman, and go-with-the-flow water guy Wade as they discover how much they have in common, despite their apparent differences.

The film was inspired by director Peter Sohn's childhood in New York City. “My parents emigrated from Korea in the early 1970s and built a bustling grocery store in the Bronx,” he said. “We were among many families who ventured to a new land with hopes and dreams—all of us mixing into one big salad bowl of cultures, languages and beautiful little neighborhoods. That’s what led me to ‘Elemental.’”

“Our story is based on the classic elements—fire, water, land and air,” Sohn continued. “Some elements mix with each other, and some don’t. What if these elements were alive?”
