Sea of Thieves is finally meeting up with another big pirate game, Monkey Island, in a new expansion announced at today's Xbox Showcase.
Xbox revealed more details about the collaboration with Lucasfilm Games in a blog post after the announcement, which billed it as a three-part Tall Tale expansion that will start rolling out on July 20. It'll be released in monthly installments, all of which will be free.
Officially titled The Legend of Monkey Island, the expansion will feature characters – including Guybrush Threepwood, Elaine, LeChuck, Murray the Demonic Talking Skull – and voice actors from the classic adventure series.
"You’ll get to visit freely explorable versions of both Mêlée Island and Monkey Island, solving puzzles in a point-and-click style adapted for Sea of Thieves first-person view – and it’ll all take place in the Sea of the Damned, so you’ll have no interruptions from other players as you relive the iconic series in a brand-new way," Xbox elaborates in the blog post.
It's only the latest major pirate crossover to come to Sea of Thieves after its Pirates of the Caribbean update in 2021. In fact, developer Rare teased the Monkey Island crossover in a sneaky Easter egg in that Pirates of the Caribbean update, so today's announcement is one fans have been holding out hope for for a couple of years.
